About the Westy

Do you really have a Rusty Westy?
In 2008, my husband brought home a 1975 VW Westfalia, aka a “Hippie Bus.”  Like most cars that have been around for over 30 years, there was a considerable amount of rust on her.  We decided to combat the rust like any good hippie would and paint it!

The day the bus came home.

After we decided that we couldn’t decide on what sort of paint job to put on the bus, I got a call from my husband who was at the Home Depot.  “How about a chalkboard so we can change it to whatever we want?”  What a great idea!  He brought it home and we got to work.  Using hand sanders while working in the driveway, with our neighbors no-doubt wondering “What are those people doing now?” we created something unique.

During this entire process, I was in the middle of trying to come up with a name for my new design business.  Our 6 year old son was running around the house singing, “Rusty Westy…Rusty Westy….Rusty Westy…..” So when the paperwork needed to be filled out, it was just natural to say it.  “Rusty Westy Designs, Inc” was born.

The Chalk Bus is known throughout the Atlanta area.  She appears at not only VW shows and events, but also with the Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scout events.
